Yuna:
Her role as the main character is
indisputable. The only thing indisputable is
whether or not this game actually has a
plot. Yuna is the central point of the game
because she's just going around visiting people
she knew from Final Fantasy 10. The
new plot developments in this game are New
Yevon, Youth League, Shuyin/Lenne, and the
Crimson Squad, and Yuna puts herself in the
middle of most of these. I would say the Shuyin/Lenne
plot is the central plot, and Yuna is being
possessed by Lenne, so yeah, she's pretty involved.
But aside from that, Yuna puts herself right
in the middle of everything going on in all
of Spira, so she's definitely the main character. |

Paine:
I would say Paine is unnecessary,
but her backstory with Gippal, Nooj, Baralai,
and the Crimson Squad in general ties her to
one of the most interesting parts of Final
Fantasy X-2. There is an interesting backstory,
and Paine is your girl from this backstory,
so she has ties to a great deal of the secondary
plot. The whole game is a series of side-plots,
so you could argue that she is central because
she's important in one of the most important
side-plots, but the problem with Paine is that
when it comes to the "main plot,"
she is completely sidelined and does nothing
whatsoever. Her role is fitting because most
of the game is Yuna and Rikku saying hi to
people they knew from before, and Paine wasn't
there, so like any social experience like that,
Paine just hangs back and says/does nothing.
Her role is the awkward new friend, and awkward
new friends are always Secondary Cast. Remember
that, because it's an important life lesson.
Tell any awkward new friends that they are
secondary. They'll love it. |

Rikku:
Rikku's role in this game is
to be the dorky flirt pretty much all
the way through. She seems to always either
be behind Yuna and instigating all the
group high-fives, or be behind Paine and
trying her best to taunt Paine into a
bloody, homicidal rage. This game isn't
full of plot, so it's really hard to say
who is really involved with the plot,
but aside from maybe Cid moping on the
Thunder Plains or Brother trying to get
with his cousin, Rikku isn't really tied
to this plot. No more than Brother, Buddy,
or even Barkeep!
...Maybe more than Barkeep. |

Final
Remarks
I
know, you disagree, right? You wanted
Paine as Unnecessary Cast and Rikku as
True Cast. Or perhaps all three as True
Cast because there are only three so why
not? This was definitely a hard True Cast
to decide because it depends how you look
at things. What is the main plot? I...don't
know. Which side-plots are most relevant
to the game's story and experience? I...don't
know. If you're looking at this from a
non-story perspective, Rikku definitely
has a larger role than I'm giving her
credit for because she gets into everybody's
business and makes jokes about anything
that happens ever. Her absence would definitely
change the game, so it's hard to call
her unnecessary, but I am! Neener-neener!
And as for Paine, she's almost the opposite.
If you removed her from the game, not
much would change, but, for me, removing
her would take out one of the best elements
in the game, so to me that at
least puts her into Secondary Cast.
